During a routine inspection

At our last inspection on 22 October 2013 we found that equipment used skin treatments had not received annual servicing since 2012.

At this inspection the provider sent us copies of servicing reports for all machines which showed they had been undertaken within the last year. The provider had made arrangements to ensure that they received copies of all reports directly so that they could directly monitor the safety of the equipment used.

During a routine inspection

At the time of our inspection no one who used the service was available to speak with. We reviewed the last two month's client feedback forms and found that all the forms we saw were positive about the service. Comments we saw included 'good service and good results' and 'professional and friendly staff'.

We also found that treatment met people's individual needs and that adequate risk assessments were completed prior to treatment. The premises had been well maintained and were suitably laid out. Equipment such as laser machines and electrical devices had been checked and serviced in all but one instant where we found a machine used for skin treatments had not received its annual service. Records were accurate and had been securely stored.

People who use the service understand the care, treatment and support available to them. They told us the service was personally recommended to them, and that they were provided with sufficient information to make informed choices.

People's needs were assessed properly. All clients completed a health assessment questionnaire prior to their consultation and were asked for their signed consent to treatment.

The provider had taken some reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening. However there was no evidence of safeguarding reporting policies or training.

Criminal Records Bureau checks were carried out on all treating staff for the laser service. However we have some concerns about the process for obtaining and monitoring criminal records bureau checks for other staff at these premises.

People were protected from unsafe or unsuitable equipment. Annual servicing of laser equipment was carried out as part of preventive maintenance and service contracts, and relevant issues were acted upon.

The provider was able to demonstrate a range of methods in which the quality of the service is being effectively monitored and that outcomes were acted upon. However there was a lack of clarity about the degree to which clinical experts were involved in quality assurance processes relating to the review of clinical policies.

During a routine inspection

Laserase Romford is a small clinic offering cosmetic treatments. It was not practical or appropriate to speak to people who use the service on the day of our visit. Opinions of people who use the service are collected by the provider and their comments are reviewed to promote service improvement.
