During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people using the service during our inspection and looked at young people's questionnaires and feedback of the service as well as talking with staff and reviewing records.

All of the people we spoke with were satisfied with the service they had received. People had the choice of booking an appointment or they could just drop in without needing to make an appointment. People told us they were provided with useful information and received full explanations and advice on their care and treatment.

We found that care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that ensured people's safety and welfare were addressed. We saw that arrangements were in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies including appropriate staff training.

We found that young people accessing the service were being protected. Robust recruitment and vetting procedures were followed. This helped to ensure that only appropriate staff were recruited.

The service regularly assessed and monitored the quality of care and treatment provided by using a range of methods. People who used the service were encouraged to express their views and experiences and these were taken into account in the way the service was provided.

At the time of our visit the clinic did not have a manager who was registered with us. Our discussions with the area director for the clinic indicated that action to register a manager would be undertaken as a priority.

During a routine inspection

All of the young people using the services of Brook Birmingham told us they were happy with the service they received which met their sexual health needs. Comments made by young people included, 'In the waiting areas there is lots of good information,' 'You can get free advice and information which is useful' and 'Staff really nice here and I feel comfortable coming here.'

A young person described to us that when they first came to Brook Birmingham, they were made to feel welcome by the reception staff. This young person told us that the building was 'tucked away' but this was good as it removed the fear of them seeing anyone they knew. This young person also said that information about sexual health issues including the different types of products was available and staff always listened to their issues without judging them.

Another young person told us that the service was accessible to them at the times they needed it to be. This young person acknowledged that sometimes they had to wait to be seen but they could book an appointment. This young person told us that they did not mind waiting to be seen as they valued the advice and services they received.

A further young person told us that they could get free information, advice and products from Brook Birmingham and were able to talk freely and openly about their sexual health matters. This young person also told us that they are seen in a private room, which was good for discussing their private matters with staff.
