During a routine inspection

We found that care was delivered to meet the needs of the people who use the service. People's care and welfare were looked after, including their health needs.

Staff were competent, skilled and well trained to meet people's needs. They were well supported by other healthcare professionals, for example, psychology support for working with people whose behaviour can be challenging.

We found that people who use the service were kept safe from harm, including safe management of medication, cleaning materials, and that their nutritional needs were well met. Staff demonstrated an understanding of safeguarding vulnerable people from harm and abuse.

One person who uses the service told us how staff support her well in having a fulfilling life, including a job. Some people who use the service had limited communication abilities and so we could not speak to them directly about their views. However, we were able to observe their mood, behaviour and how they interacted positively with staff

During a routine inspection

Overall, the people who use the service expressed high levels of satisfaction, and we are satisfied that the service is compliant with all of the sixteen essential standards. We have one moderate concern over essential standard 9, the management of medications.

Residents spoken to said that they liked living at this home, and that they felt safe. They said they were treated well by the staff, and indicated that they had choice and control over their daily lives. There was evidence that the home seeks to meet the equality and diversity needs of residents, for example through the provision of food and choice of holidays. One resident said 'I like Portway.' While another commented that 'The home is nice and better.'
