During a routine inspection

As part of our inspection we spent time observing life in the home. We spoke with three people who lived at the home and two relatives. We also spoke with three staff, the manager and one of the providers. This helped us to understand people's experiences of living at the home.

During our inspection, everybody received unhurried care and support. Everyone received the same caring response from care staff and were included in the activities and conversations taking place. One person who lived at the home told us: 'Very happy here. Girls are very good and help me where I need them to. They come straightaway if I press my alarm. I get on with them all.'

People received the right care and support, at the right time and in the right way. All the staff we spoke with had a good understanding of people's preferences, routines and care needs. One relative told us: 'She is well looked after and that makes a real difference. I trust them all and they involve me in the care mom needs.'

Staff that we spoke with told us that they were happy working at the home. They were supported to meet people's individual health and social care needs by the on-going training they received. Staff also said they enjoyed their key worker roles as this helped staff to be responsive to people's needs and to get to know people living at the home.

At our previous inspection in September 2012 we had some concerns about the arrangements in place to check and monitor that the home was being well run. During this inspection we saw that improvements had been made. The provider was carrying out regular audits and quality checks in the home. This ensured people received effective care that was of a good standard and kept people safe from harm.

5 September 2012

During a routine inspection

This inspection was unannounced which meant no one living at or working at Nightingales Residential knew that we were coming.

During our inspection we spent time observing people who used the service while they were in the dining room and in the lounge. We were able to spent time speaking with these people about their experiences at the home. We also spoke to care staff and two of the providers.

We saw that care workers were being courteous and respectful towards people who used the service ensuring that people's dignity was upheld.

Care plans, risk assessments and other records were generally in place to give staff guidance and direction about the level of care required to meet individual needs.

Limited information on safeguarding was available for members of staff. Further staff training was due to take place. It was evident that staff had an understanding of their responsibilities in the event of them becoming aware or suspecting actual or potential abusive events.

Recruitment procedures were carried out to ensure that prospective members of staff had checks carried out on them prior to them starting work at the home.

Suitable systems were not in place to assess and monitor the quality of care provided and as a means to identify any improvements needed. We found errors in the management of medication which were not found as part of their own internal monitoring processes.
