During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke at length with one of the six people living in the home and had shorter discussions with two others. People told us that staff encourage and support them to do things for themselves.

One person said they knew who to speak to if they had a complaint and staff listened to their concerns and tried to resolve them. They said they were happy living at the home, liked their room and meals. They told us all of staff were 'nice and friendly.'

During a routine inspection

As part of the visit we spoke with people who live at Acorn Lodge Care Home, they told us that the staff give them the support and care they need and we observed staff responding to people promptly in a manner which respected their dignity.

People using the service told us they are happy with the range and quality of meals and their likes and dislikes are incorporated into meal plans. Generally people were happy with the environment in which they live, and all knew about the plans that the provider has to build a new extension and redecorate and refurbish the existing part of the home.

We were told that people feel safe at the home and staff are helpful and available to talk to if they were concerned about anything. There is a complaints and a safeguarding leaflet in their bedrooms and they would speak to the manager if they had concerns about their care and treatment. They told us that there were enough staff working at the home and that staff had the skills to provide the care and support they needed.

Two healthcare professionals told us that they have seen improvements within the service since the new owner took over, particularly in relation to record keeping. A care manager spoken with told us the safeguarding investigation initiated in August 2010 had been closed. They felt since the new provider took over the home there had been lots of improvements and as a result they have placed somebody new in the home.

The quality improvement officer for adult social services told us they were much happier with the standards of the service. They felt the new provider had been working hard to respond promptly to any/all issues raised by adult social services and health colleagues. The provider had also provided evidence that tasks have been completed appropriately giving more confidence in the service.

Relatives spoken with as part of the review told us the staff treat people with dignity and respect and they were generally happy with the care and support their relative living in the home received.
