Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

People spoke positively about staff and told us they found staff kind, caring and compassionate. One person told us, “All the staff are super, language isn’t always easy, but they do their best. They are very kind.” Another person told us, “There are some good ones here, some are a bit abrupt, but most are good, I can have a chat with them.” One relative told us, “Staff are very kind. My loved one gets very spoiled. There are loads of laughter here.”

Staff knew people well and ensured people’s privacy and dignity was respected. One staff member told us, “When I help people to have a wash, I always close the door and cover them with a towel.” Another staff member told us,” I treat my residents like my family, with respect.”

During the inspection we were approached by a visitor who’s loved one passed away recently and they told us, “My loved one was very poorly but everybody was so kind and respectful. Staff looked after them very well.” The register manager conducted periodic dignity audits to ensure that care provided to people was kind and compassionate.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

People were treated as individuals and staff had a good understanding of people’s individual needs. One person told us, “All the staff are good, caring and they understand my needs.” One relative told us, “My loved one used to be frightened of using the hoist and now they are actively involved. They do get very anxious in the morning and staff are very good at addressing this and reassuring them.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Staff offered people choices and supported them to be as independent as possible. One person told us, “I’ve been in few homes before and this is the best.” Another person told us, “If I don’t like the food, they give me something else.”

However, it wasn’t clear how people who may have difficulty in communicating their needs were supported to maintain their independence. We raised this with the provider who told us people’s care plans were going to be reviewed.

People told us they felt they could speak up and share their feedback. One person told us, “I would speak to a carer or someone higher up if I was worried. “The staff and manager are lovely, and any concerns are dealt with.” People received a monthly newsletter to keep abreast with events taking place in the home.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

Staff responded to people’s immediate needs and had a good understanding of these. People’s feedback was sought after, and there were regular opportunities for people to share their views.

Feedback gathered from people was analysed and action was taken as a result of this. For example, some people commented that food portions weren’t big enough and this was increased. One person told us, “My family cooks my food and brings it in, I have a fridge in my room and staff heats it up for me.” One relative told us, “We have regular resident and relative meetings, and we are able to ask questions and make suggestions.

Staff sought input from other professionals when required to ensure that people’s needs were met. One staff member told us, “We work with District Nurses and Tissue Viability Nurses. We would call for advice if needed.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider recognised staff input and their work through different recognition initiatives. For example, the registered manager highlighted staff contributions through Good News Friday Award.

Staff spoke very positively about the registered manager and found them supportive. For example, one staff member told us how their working pattern was altered to support them with commitments at home. Another staff member told us,” They believe in you and want you to better-self.”

Staff were given opportunities to provide their feedback through regular supervisions, appraisals and team meetings.

Staff told us they could raise concerns and speak up when needed. One staff member told us,” Everyone is open, and I can always speak to the manager and director.”

Staff were provided with regular training and opportunities to progress in their roles. There were appropriate processes and procedures in place to support staff well-being and enablement.
