During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last inspection on the 20th February 2012 we found shortfalls in several outcome areas. We asked the provider to take action to address these areas in order to achieve compliance.

At that time we found that some of the decoration, furniture and furnishings in the home were not of an acceptable standard and shortfalls were identified regarding cleanliness and infection control.

We found that the provider had not ensured that new staff were receiving appropriate induction training. She had also not put in place arrangements to identify, assess and manage identified risks to the health, welfare and safety of people living in the home..

At this inspection we found that some improvements needed to achieve compliance had been made.

People we spoke with, including the person living in the home and their relative were satisfied with the care and support provided:

'I like it here, everyone is very kind. It's comfortable and the food is very good'.

''The care is excellent and my mother is very happy. She has lived there for more than 15 years, it is her home and if she had to move out I think it would kill her''.

They also spoke of the kindness of the care workers, who they described as being 'always so helpful'.

A care worker told us that she felt supported by the manager and had completed various training courses over recent months, including safeguarding.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People living in the home and their nearest relatives who we spoke to were generally happy with the care being received. Staff were said to be supportive and caring.

One relative said the atmosphere in the home was happier and more relaxed than it had been before in the fifteen years their mother had lived at Caburn House.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Three of the four people we talked to had broadly positive views on their care, though one had only been a resident for a week.

A fourth resident who has lived at the home for the past eighteen months, was unhappy and wanted 'to get away'.

There was no evidence that information about people's experiences had been asked for and gathered in such a way to allow for monitoring of risks and the quality of care delivery.

28 January and 28 February 2011

During a routine inspection

Overall, people told us they were happy with the service and that their needs were met. They also told us that staff looked after them and listened to their requests. They told us that they have a choice of meals and that if they were not happy with the service they would feel comfortable talking to the manager or staff. Whilst the comments made by people were mainly positive, not all of the people we spoke to were able to give a clear response due to their illness. In addition, issues were raised in relation to lack of clarity in respect of giving consent to care, risk of cross infection and safety of the premises.
