All Inspections

19 November 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with one person who used the service and looked at the provider's 2012 feedback survey. This was a survey of all its services, including Queen Mary's registered unit.

People who use the service were asked for their involvement in developing their care plan. All people's risk assessments and care plans were up to date. Care plans were person centred.

People were not cared for in a clean, hygienic environment. Staff had been through a recruitment process and subjected to the appropriate pre-employment checks.

People were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines. There was a complaints policy in place and people were given information on how to make a complaint.

People who use the service told us that they were happy living at the Queen Mary Registered Unit. They told us that they felt well cared for and that they liked the staff. We looked at people's care plans and saw that their care was planned in a way that ensured their safety and well-being. We saw that risk assessments were updated regularly and that support plans accurately reflected the needs of people. People who use the service told us that they agreed with the care being provided and confirmed that they knew about the assessments that had been carried out. They said that staff always sought their permission before delivering care. However, in one person's care plan neither the person nor their advocate had signed the documentation in their care plan and staff were unable to explain why.

People who use the service told us that they felt safe living at the service. They knew how to raise a concern and felt comfortable doing do. All staff had received safeguarding training and there were policies and procedures in place for this.

Staff told us that they felt well supported by management and that they received regular training. We saw that staff were supervised regularly and were appraised annually. The quality of the service was monitored at local and provider level through spot checks and inspections. People who use the service were supported to give feedback in a variety of ways and audits were also undertaken.

People told us that staff were good, looked after their needs and were happy living at Queen Mary's. They felt safe, protected and chose what to do, when they wanted to. They also enjoyed living with others at Queen Mary's because of the support they received from staff. They got meals from the canteen, takeaways or sometimes cook with staff support. People were also helped by staff to keep their rooms tidy. They were involved in planning their care, made their own decisions and have signed their tenancy agreements and care plans. If they wanted to make a complaint, people knew how to although they said there was nothing to complain about. Any problems were sorted out informally by a member of staff or manager.
