Heatherside Care Home is a residential service which provides personal care and accommodation for up to 34 people, aged 65 and over. We carried out this assessment between 11 December 2023 and 18 December 2023. This included an on-site inspection visit which took place on 12 December 2023. We looked at how well staff and leaders promoted a positive and proactive learning culture. This included how well they investigated, learnt from and shared information about safety events to meet people’s needs, and where necessary identify and drive improvements. There were clear and effective systems in place to monitor, review and drive improvement in relation to safety incidents at Heatherside Care Home. This included policies and processes in place to ensure staff took appropriate action in response to safety events, such as when people experienced falls. We reviewed evidence that leaders promoted and supported staff to embed a positive learning culture and reviewed information about safety events to drive improvement. For example, the provider had taken action to maximise lighting in areas of the home where they identified this as part of risk reduction and mitigation from monthly audits of incidents. This was on-going and the provider had plans to refurbish other areas of the home and maximise lighting. We reviewed records and spoke with people who confirmed safety events were managed with an open and transparent approach. The provider followed their duty of candour policy appropriately where this was required. The provider had implemented a monitoring and auditing system inline with the Care Quality Commission's new Quality Statement Framework and I/WE Statements to review whether they were meeting their regulatory requirements.

People's experience of the service

Updated 5 December 2023

People's feedback about the service they received was consistently positive. People we spoke with told us they felt safe. We receive feedback that people felt staff and leaders listened to their views and would take appropriate action to address any safety concerns. The provider had processes in place to ensure people and their relatives had opportunities to give feedback on their experience of the care provided. This included opportunities for engagement through residents and relatives’ meetings and feedback on regular surveys throughout the year. We spoke with the leadership team who told us how they review and action peoples feedback to drive improvement.
