During an inspection looking at part of the service

The purpose of this review was to assess improvements made in relation to shortfalls identified during our previous review of compliance undertaken on 24 October 2011, therefore we did not request information directly from people using the service. However during our visit in October 2011 we did speak to people about their experience of living in the home and they told us that they enjoyed living at Heritage House and that staff were available when they needed them.

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with told us that they very much liked Heritage House and the staff that looked after them. Comments we received included, 'I don't think you could find a better home and the staff are always here when you need them.' Another person told us, 'The girls (staff) are always jolly and that makes me happy'. This person was particularly pleased that staff helped him visit his favourite football club for his birthday and he reported, 'That was a wonderful day, something I will always remember'. People were very appreciative of the small size of the home which meant they could get to know staff very well. Relatives we spoke with also rated the home highly and one commented, 'It's not an institution. It's her home'. One relative felt that staff were responsive to requests made of them telling us, 'I told Simon (the manager) what mum's favourite poem was and he downloaded it from the internet for her. It was such a thoughtful thing to do.'

One person described the food 'As not too bad', but told us that there was no choice of food at lunch. She reported that the food 'Just turns up', without the opportunity to choose something different.
