Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 26 August 2025 to 22 September 2025. Silver Mews Care Homeis a residential care home. It supports up to 41 adults and older people, some of whom are living with dementia. The service is set over 2 floors with access to enclosed gardens. At the time of this assessment 33 people were using the service.
This was a responsive assessment due to concerns raised to CQC about infection control, safe care and treatment, and governance. The assessment was unannounced.
We found breaches of the legal regulations in relation to medicines management, infection prevention and control, and the safety of the environment. There were inconsistencies in people’s care records with some being more detailed and person-centred than others. We identified shortfalls in the delivery of person-centred care, particularly the provision of activities. Management oversight of the service needed improvement and quality assurance audits had not identified or remedied all the issues found at this assessment.
Staff were not up to date with all training. There were not always enough staff to cover additional roles such as cleaning and activities although the provider was actively recruiting.
We received mixed feedback from relatives and staff about the way concerns were addressed. There had been a number of concerns raised about the quality of food and during the assessment some people told us this was still an issue.
We observed some positive and caring interactions between staff and people using the service. Staff responded quickly to people when they made requests, and the atmosphere was calm and relaxed especially at busy mealtimes.
The home was decorated to a high standard and had a variety of communal areas for people to use. However, some areas were infrequently used and were not always decorated to best suit the needs of people living with a dementia.
We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
People's experience of this service
Most people and their relatives commented positively about their care and the environment. One person told us, “It’s the company here I enjoy, I like to come to the dining room to see everyone.” A relative told us, “When you walk in here it always feels nice and homely.” However, we also received some negative feedback about daily personal care and the cleanliness of peoples’ bedrooms.
People and relatives had a mixed experience of the management of the service. One person told us, “Staff are making decisions themselves.” A relative told us, “I know who the manager is, where to find them, and I can go to them.”
People spoke positively about staff. One person told us, “They are lovely, they come quite punctually when I call them.”
People who used the service, staff and relatives raised issues about the quality and the range of food on offer at the home. One person told us, “Well it is OK (the food) that’s all.” A relative told us, “The food is served on cold plates and food can be cold.”
We received mixed feedback regarding activities provided for people. One person told us, “I get my hair done, the lady that comes to do it is beautiful.” A relative told us, “I haven’t seen anything going on that my relative could join in with.”
We received concerns from peoples’ relatives regarding medicines administration. A relative told us, “I am not sure if my relative gets their medicines on time.”
We used the short observational framework for inspection (SOFI) to observe staff interacting with people. We observed some positive interactions.
