During a routine inspection

We spoke to two people during the inspection visit. We also spoke to two relatives of people who lived at the home as well as a health and social care professional from a community learning disability team.

We found that each person's needs were assessed and care plans recorded of how staff supported people. These included personal care as well as social activities. People told us they were supported well and had support with personal care and attending community activities. One of the people we spoke to said, 'I love it here.'

Relatives told us the home provided a good service. One relative said, 'It's the most wonderful place my son/daughter could live.'

We saw the home sought the consent and agreement of people to the support arrangements. There were procedures in place for assessing people's capacity to consent and for making decisions on behalf of people if they did not have capacity to consent to care and treatment.

The home was clean and generally well maintained. Regular checks were made to ensure people lived in a safe environment.

The home was adequately staffed with three staff on duty. At night time there was one 'waking' staff member and one staff on 'sleep in' duty.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we saw that people were being treated with dignity and spoken to as adults in a respectful way. People were being enabled to do what they wanted for themselves, express their wishes and participate in making decisions relating to their individual lifestyle.

We spoke with two people who lived at the service. They told us they were happy with the support they received and said the staff were friendly and helpful. One person told us 'there is always someone here you can talk to'. They said they would feel comfortable in reporting any concerns they had to the manager or staff.

We saw that people's privacy and independence were respected, people experienced safe and effective care based on detailed care plans and risk assessments that met individual needs.

People using the service were protected from abuse as they were supported by a staff team who had appropriate knowledge and training on safeguarding adults. We saw policies on whistle blowing and safeguarding. People's rights were respected.

We saw evidence that staff received ongoing training and supervision which provided them with the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of the people they were supporting.

The Provider had effective systems in place to monitor quality assurance and compliance.

During a routine inspection

On the day of our visit one person was not able to speak with us and we were able to have limited verbal communication with another two people. We therefore spent time during our visit observing the care and support being given and how staff interacted with people.

We saw that people were being spoken with and supported in a sensitive, respectful and professional manner. They were enabled to do things for themselves and were encouraged to express their views and make, or participate in making, decisions relating to their care and treatment.

People we spoke with confirmed that they were getting the care and support they needed and that staff treated them well. One person told us how staff supported them to do the things they wanted to do, which included going on holiday once a year.

Staff communicated well with people who used the service and worked in ways that maximised their choice, control and inclusion. People were encouraged to take part in the daily running of the home and staff listened to what they said and responded appropriately.
