During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people using the service, three members of staff and the manager. We observed support given to people using the service during our inspection. Both people spoken with told us they were very happy and liked living at the home. One person gestured with both thumbs up when we asked if they were happy. People appeared happy and contented, and care and support were observed to be respectful and responsive to individuals' needs.

Staff practices ensured people were enabled to give their consent to care and support whenever possible. Where people did not have capacity to consent, effective systems ensured their rights and well-being were protected in line with legal requirements.

People living at the service and staff knew and got on well with each other. We reviewed care plans for three of the seven people at the service and found they were detailed, up-to-date and person-centred.

The premises were adapted and effectively maintained so as to be safe and suited to the specific needs of people living there. The provider's recruitment and selection processes ensured staff employed were suitable and sufficiently skilled to provide effective care and support to vulnerable people. There were effective systems for recording and responding to complaints, and an easy-read guide to the process was made available to people using the service.

11 December 2012

During a routine inspection

We made an unannounced visit to Harefield Lodge and looked at the care and welfare of people who used the service. On arrival we found that there was a new manager in post who had not yet registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The Manager informed us that that they had recently taken up this position and was in the process of re-registering with the CQC

We met with three people who lived at the home during the visit. We were unable to gather their views as some people did not communicate verbally. One person did tell us that said 'I'm fine' and smiled with their thumbs up which we took to indicated they were happy.

We spent time observing how staff interacted and supported people. We saw staff treating people in a sensitive, respectful and professional manner. We also spoke with two visitors from the Independent Living Group (ILG) who arrived to carry out the homes Annual Fire Risk Assessment and an unannounced internal quality audit.

We looked around the building which was clean and free from unpleasant odours. Two people showed us their studio flat which were personalised with pictures and their own belongings.

During a routine inspection

We talked to two residents about some of the outcomes we looked at during the inspection visit. Due to the level of learning difficulty we were unable to gather their views on all the outcomes. However, people did tell us that they liked living at the home and having their own flat with cooking facilities. Two people showed us their studio flat which were personalised with pictures and one person told us that they had been out shopping that morning with a member of staff.
