All Inspections

2 December 2013

During a routine inspection

During the inspection we spoke with several people who used the service, visitors, four staff including care workers and nursing staff, and the registered manager. Some people who used the service were able to tell us their views of the service. Others were unable to answer our questions. Some responded by gestures or by providing 'yes' or 'no' answers.

Comments from people who used the service and visitors included 'The staff are fantastic, I can't fault them, they are absolutely wonderful' and 'Any concerns are taken on board immediately.'

People who used the service told us that the staff were kind and treated them well. People and their relatives told us that they were involved in decisions about people's care. It was not evident that everyone living in the home had enough to do.

People who used the service had a plan of care that included up to date information about the individual support and care they needed. People's health, safety and welfare were protected as they received the advice and treatment that they needed from a range of healthcare and social care professionals.

People knew how to make a complaint. Complaints were responded to appropriately. Records were accurate, up to date and kept secure.

8 March 2013

During a routine inspection

We found that the home was clean and free from odours. People were treated according to their needs and with respect and dignity. People told us that, "All the staff are wonderful" and, "the staff are fantastic". We spoke to relatives of people using the service and they said, "The care is second to none" and, "I have complete trust in the home".

People told us that they were able to make choices about the treatment and care they received and we saw evidence of this. The staff said, "we involve patients and their relatives in care plans" and, "we involve their family if a person is unable to understand". Assessments were carried out to ensure that people's needs were appropriately assessed before admission to the home. Regular reviews of care and treament plans were also undertaken. Staff received appropriate training and support to ensure that people were cared for safely.

The provider had infection control policies and audits in place but daily checks were not recorded.

24 April 2012

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not speak directly with people using the service but we used a number of different methods to help us assess whether the provider was compliant with the standards where we previously had concerns.

We found that the home was clean and there were no odours. New arrangements have been introduced to monitor the standard of cleanliness. Many areas have been repainted or refurbished to improve the environment where people lived.

The standard for the management of medicines had improved to ensure that people were protected against the risks associated with the unsafe and inappropriate management of medicines. There were comprehensive checks to ensure that this was maintained.

26 May 2011

During a routine inspection

People told us that staff involved them in the care and support they received. Relatives said that their views were taken into consideration when caring and supporting people and they were involved in drawing up and reviewing care plans. They reported that staff kept them informed if there were changes in the conditions of people. Relatives added that home meetings were arranged, where they had an opportunity to discuss issues relevant to the home and to contribute to the day to day life of the home.

Relatives said that they had the confidence that the service was meeting the needs of people. They told us that social and recreational activities were arranged for people to keep them occupied and stimulated and people were supported to meet their spiritual needs. We observed that people appeared well cared for and were relaxed and comfortable in the home.

People and relatives liked the environmental facilities offered by the service and they enjoyed the privacy that was offered by the en-suite single rooms. Relatives thought that the bedrooms were maintained and personalised and they told us that they felt welcomed to the home whenever they visited. They said that they liked the peaceful and pleasant grounds of the home where they could sit and relax with the people they visited.

People and relatives reported that staff always made an effort to provide a quality service. They said that they have completed satisfaction surveys to give feedback about the quality of the service and were confident that management would address any issues that had been identified to improve the service.

Relatives told us that the complaints procedure was available in the bedrooms and they would talk to staff or the manager if they had any concerns about the standard of care and support provided to people. They trusted that the manager and her staff would take their concerns seriously and would address these appropriately.
