All Inspections

31 January and 12 February 2014

During a routine inspection

At the time of our inspection the service supported 18 children and young people in their own homes. The children and young people were unable to share their experiences with us due to their disability or age.

Three parents we spoke with were happy with the care and support their child received, and felt that the service met their needs. They told us that their child liked the staff that supported them. Comments from parents included 'I have a great worker who is very supportive; my child is well matched to their worker and enjoys spending time with them and, the service has helped a lot as I get the support I need.'

The service was flexible and centred around the needs of the child and their family.

Parents said that they felt listened to and involved in decisions about the care and support their child received. They received the help they needed at their preferred times, from staff who were aware of their needs.

Staff had the knowledge and skills to meet the children and young people's needs. The training and supervision arrangements had been strengthened to ensure that staff received appropriate training and support to carry out their work.

The recruitment procedures had also been strengthened to ensure that children and young people were cared for by suitable staff.

During a routine inspection

This was the first review of the Derby service. Children using the service were unable to share their experiences with us due to their disability and age.

Parents we spoke with were very happy with the care and support their child received, and felt that the service met their needs. One parent told us 'my support worker is wonderful and so helpful. The service is flexible and we receive support when we need it.' Another parent told us 'the service is so important to us; I don't know what we would do without the support. We have a good relationship with our support worker and my child looks forward to her visits.'

Parents found the service to be flexible as their family received the help they needed at their preferred times, from staff who were aware of their needs.

Children and their parents were treated with consideration and respect. Suitable arrangements were in place to protect children from the risk of abuse. Parents felt able to express their views, and to report any concerns they may have to staff.

Staff had appropriate skills and experience to meet the children's needs. We found that the training and supervision arrangements required strengthening to show that staff are properly supported, and have received essential training to carry out their work.

The service was well managed with clear lines of responsibility in place, to ensure that children received consistent standards of care and service.
