During a themed inspection looking at Domiciliary Care Services

We carried out a themed inspection looking at domiciliary care services. We asked people to tell us what it was like to receive services from this home care agency as part of a targeted inspection programme of domiciliary care agencies.

We used telephone interviews and home visits to people who used the service and to their main carers (a relative or friends).

We visited five people in their homes. They told us that they were very happy with the care and support they received. Everybody told us that staff were very caring and knew how to look after them; everybody we visited said they met their regular care worker and were usually informed if the visit might be later than expected. One person told us, 'The traffic is notorious round here so we do not worry too much so long as they arrive'.

One person told us when talking about staff 'They are always so polite, they do things the way I ask and they really understand how to make you feel comfortable'.

One person told us over the telephone, they were very pleased that the same person came every week unless they were on holiday; they confirmed that they were informed in advance if changes were made to their regular care worker.

Everybody spoken to said they felt they could raise concerns with the agency and knew who to talk to.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who used the service in their home, who told us that the staff were very respectful towards them. They said they felt consulted and involved in their individual care packages. They told us that the things that were important to them in relation to their care and support were established as part of their assessment. The support they received met their needs in a sensitive caring manner.

Relatives of people who used the service told us that communication with Carewatch (North Somerset) staff was very good. They told us that staff asked what needs to be done when they arrived. One relative told us 'they are very respectful and always maintain my relative's dignity'. Another relative said 'This is our family home. We do not want it to feel like a hospital and the care workers from Carewatch (North Somerset) respect that. I would be more than happy to recommend them'.

People we visited in their own homes told us that they were happy with Carewatch North Somerset care workers. One person told us 'I have no complaints. The staff are very professional. Anything I need I ask the staff in the office and they sort it out'. Another person told us that they were well looked after. 'I am very happy with the care provided by Carewatch (North Somerset)'.

Another person we spoke with in their own home who received a 24 hour package of care looked comfortable and was dressed appropriately. They told us 'I am always kept nice and warm. My food is always good and I am well looked after'.

Relatives of people who used the service told us that staff provided all aspects of personal care to their relative which was of a good standard. One relative said 'We are very happy with the care workers from Carewatch (North Somerset). 'We have a team of care workers who provide care for my relative. They are well trained and reliable'.

Another relative said "I would contact the office if there was a problem they would sort it out". They told us that their relative had regular reviews of their care package with somebody from the management team. This person said "Everybody is very approachable'.

Carewatch (North Somerset) is compliant with all five outcome areas we looked at during this unannounced review.
