During a routine inspection

We spoke with two relatives of people living at the home. One told us 'I wouldn't change anything'. The other said, 'I can't fault the home or the staff' and 'it is very homely here'.

A person living at the home told us 'the food is very good'. We observed lunch being served. One person commented that their dessert was not warm enough and the staff immediately offered to warm it up. We saw the results of a service user audit in February 2013. 100% of people responding said they got enough to eat.

We looked at six of the bedrooms. One person said they were 'very happy' with their bedroom. A relative commented that the home was 'kept really nice and always very clean'.

The Manager told us that the staff team was well established and there was little staff turnover. The longest serving member of staff had been at the home for 20 years. Since our last inspection in July 2012 two new members of staff had been recruited. People told us 'the staff are very kind'.

We saw that the Manager carried out various checks on the quality of the service. People using the service and visiting healthcare professionals were asked for their feedback.

During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit 12 people were living at the home. We observed that many of the people had complex care needs such as dementia. This meant it was difficult for some people to tell us about their experiences of living at the home.

However, we spoke with two people who lived at the home and they said 'It's all right living here' and 'I am very comfortable here'. We heard that staff were 'very good', and 'very kind'. People told us that staff were respectful and provided care that was dignified. Both people said they felt 'safe' and believed they received 'good care'.

We saw that the home employed a dedicated staff member to provide activities and individual time with people living in the home. We observed that people brightened up and became alert and responded with smiles when the activity person was in the room.

We saw that the manager had sent out feedback questionnaires to relatives of people living in the home in January 2012. Comments included '(We) feel our mum is safe and cared for in a happy environment'; 'All staff friendly and helpful' and 'No complaints, brilliant staff and a lovely home'.

Local authority commissioners told us they had visited the home earlier this year and were not aware of any concerns in relation to this service.
