Heathside Mews is a 'care home' providing accommodation and personal care for up to 25 people, some of whom were living with dementia. At the time of the inspection, 17 people were living at the home.

We found the following examples of good practice.

During the inspection we observed staff complying with infection prevention and control (IPC) procedures. Staff were observed wearing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) and were supported with specific IPC training.

The environment was clean and hygienic; extra IPC cleaning schedules had been implemented and routine audits were completed to ensure the environment was safe and well maintained.

The registered manager ensured that staffing levels were effectively managed; people received care from staff who were employed by Warrington Community Living (the provider) and minimal agency staff were utilised.

A regular testing regime was in place for people living at the home and staff who worked there. This provided assurances that any positive COVID-19 cases were identified and managed in a timely manner.

Relatives and loved ones were supported to maintain contact with people living at Heathside Mews. Socially distanced visits were facilitated, remote video calls were supported, and a newly designed visiting pod had been set up for visitors to use to see their loved ones.

The provider ensured that all relevant COVID-19 policies and procedures were effectively communicated. There was also a dedicated 'COVID-19 staff champion' in place; the staff champion had received all necessary training, observed staff practice and offered support and guidance to the staff team.
