During a routine inspection

During our inspection we visited four wards, the Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU), and the outpatients department. We spoke with fourteen inpatients and five of their visiting relatives. They told us staff who worked at St Anthony's were always kind and compassionate, and they all felt satisfied with the care and treatment provided by the hospital. Patients told us they thought all aspects of their care and treatment had been "excellent". One patient said 'my treatment has been very good. I could not fault them' and another patient told us 'I have an individual nurse who explains everything to me. When I call a nurse one arrives within seconds'. A visiting relative we met also said "the staff are so attentive here. All of them are fantastic".

We interviewed various members of the hospital's senior and clinical staff team that included; the services registered manager, the head of nursing, the head of quality development, the head of staff training and critical care, the lead infection control nurse, senior pharmacists, and ten qualified nurses and health care assistants. We also spoke with seven members of the hospitals non-clinical staff team that included; cleaners, pantry staff, receptionists and porters.

Overall, we found patients received safe and appropriate care and treatment from properly trained and supported staff. We saw staff treated patients with the utmost respect and dignity, and always involved them in discussions about their care and treatment. We saw patients were cared for and treated in a safe and clean environment. Patients were given their medicines when they needed them, and in a safe way. The hospital had effective systems in place to continually monitor the quality of the care and treatment patients received. Finally, we found that patients and their representatives had their complaints listened to and acted upon by the hospital.

During a routine inspection

St Anthony's Hospital is a private hospital owned by the Daughters of the Cross of Liege. The hospital provides a range of services such as health screening, diagnostic treatments, medical and surgical services and cardiac surgery. There are four wards a theatre suite, high dependency unit and endoscopy suite. Outpatient services are also provided. During this inspection we visited three wards, spoke with11 patients and 9 members of staff.

All of the people we spoke with were happy with the care and treatment that they had received at the hospital. They told us that staff were 'very caring', 'excellent', and 'fabulous'. Several people commented 'they can't do enough for you'. They told us that they had been given information about their treatment options and kept updated throughout their stay. They had been able to have time with their doctors so that they could ask questions. They commented favourably on the food served in the hospital and told us that choices were made available to them. Following their admission people had been asked for their views about their care and treatment and they were acted on

We were able to see that staffing levels were sufficient to meet people's needs. Staff had been able to access further training to help them deliver safe and effective care. Procedures were in place to ensure that people were safeguarded from the risk of abuse.
