During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we inspected this home on 19 June 2012 we found the provider was non compliant with the following outcomes:- Respecting and involving people, Care and welfare and management of medicines. The provider sent us their action plan which detailed how and by when they would achieve compliance with these essential standards of quality and safety.

This inspection was carried out on 10 January 2013 in order to check whether the provider had taken action to achieve compliance.

We found the provider had taken action to achieve compliance.

The two people we spoke with told us the staff were very good and very caring. They said the staff provided them with the care they required and always treated them with respect.

We spent time observing the interactions between the staff and people who use the service. These observations showed that the staff were treating people with respect, using appropriate language and enabling people to maintain their independence.

We found that new arrangements were in place for the administration and recording of medicines and a new call bell system had been installed. The checks carried out by staff during the night had been recorded and staff had received training to improve their understanding of how to maintain accurate records.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People told us they liked the staff and they had the care they needed. One person told us they felt safe at the home.

We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us.

We found that the staff were not always treating people with respect and they were using terms that did not respect peoples' adult status.

The relatives we spoke with told us the staff provided the care their family members needed and they were generally kept informed.

Relatives said if they had any concerns they would speak to managers and they were confident their concerns would be treated seriously and dealt with promptly.

One relative told us they had sometimes noted an unpleasant odour in the home but they stated they did not think this was out of the ordinary. We confirmed there was an unpleasant odour but the housekeeping staff did everthing they could to keep the home clean and the odour reduced during our inspection.
