During an inspection looking at part of the service

There were 39 people using the service at the time of this inspection, 17 of these people were assessed as needing nursing care. We spoke with one member of staff and the manager during our visit.

We found that the provider had taken appropriate action since our last inspection to ensure that people using the service were protected from the risks of inadequate nutrition and dehydration. New monitoring charts were used to record the food and drink offered to and consumed by people who were identified as at risk of inadequate nutrition and dehydration. There were new systems in place to monitor the charts and to ensure action was taken as necessary to ensure people were supported to eat and drink sufficient amounts to meet their needs.

During a routine inspection

We found that 38 people were using the service and we spoke with eight of them. All spoke positively about the care and support they had received. One person said, "I have settled well here, they do everything they can to help you. I have no complaints, if I did I would say so". We spoke with four relatives who were very satisfied with the staff and care and support provided. One relative said "I am happy with things here. Minor things have been raised in the past and they have been dealt with immediately. I have full confidence in the staff".

We saw that people's care records contained detailed information about their needs and they had access to a range of health and social care professionals. Care and treatment was planned in a way that ensured each person's safety and wellbeing.

Although there were systems in place to monitor nutrition and people's daily intake of food and fluids, we found that this was not effective. The provider was unable to demonstrate that people using the service had food and hydration in sufficient quantities to maintain their health.

There was a system in place to ensure that people were protected against the risks associated with medicines. We found that people were receiving medicines safely and as prescribed.

We saw that the environment was safe and regularly monitored. A phased refurbishment programe was in place.

Correct recruitment checks had been carried out before staff commenced work.

15 May 2012

During a routine inspection

There were 38 people living in the home at the time of this review. We spoke with ten

people to gain their views of the service. Some people in the home had limited

communication abilities and so we could not interview them to find out their views. However, we were able to observe their mood and behaviour and how they interacted with staff. We also spoke with two relatives of people in the home.

People told us they were involved in making decisions about their care, treatment and

daily routines.

We saw positive interaction between people in the home and staff. We observed that staff

showed care and concern for people and treated them with respect.

People and relatives told us they were happy with the care provided. People said "I like it here", "The staff are lovely", and "I can please myself what I do".
