All Inspections

5 November 2013

During a routine inspection

The service was due to close so there was only one person who used the service and we were unable to speak with them during our inspection. We spoke with two people who act on behalf of people who used the service (advocates), one who was currently the person's advocate and another who had previously been their advocate. We also spoke with a member of staff.

Both the advocates we spoke with told us that people who used the service were involved with their care and their views were respected. They told us people were treated with dignity.

The advocates we spoke with were happy with the care people who used the service received. They told us the service referred people to health professionals if there was a concern. The provider made appropriate arrangements to ensure people received care that was safe and met their needs.

Advocates we spoke with told us they had confidence in the staff providing care and felt they were qualified to be able to meet people's needs. We found that staff were experienced and trained to provide safe care.

We were told by advocates of people who used the service that they were able to feedback any concerns regarding the service and these concerns were listened to and acted upon. We found the service undertook appropriate quality monitoring to ensure they could meet people's needs.

Records were kept securely and were fit for purpose.

During a routine inspection

The three people who used the service were spoken to briefly before leaving for their daytime occupations. They were happy living at Woodlands and concerned about staying together as a group in the future.

We found the service clean and tidy. There were appropriate mementos of people's daily lives. However, the fabric of the building looked neglected.

People were cared for by qualified and competent staff who supported them to achieve fulfilling lives. People were encouraged to be independent, to make informed choices and were protected from harm.

During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

We carried out an unannounced visit to the home in January 2011. We found that there was an area of non compliance. We have received evidence from the provider this has been addressed and the home is now complaint. On this occasion we did not visit the home or speak to people who use the service.

During our inspection in January 2011 people told us they were happy living in the service and felt that staff listened to them. People were active in making daily decisions about their lives and staff were familiar with the individual needs of the people who use the service.

People said the home was clean and that they were supported to do the things that

they enjoyed, such as shopping and eating out.

People said the staff team ask them for their views and that they feel confident to

make a complaint to the staff.
