All Inspections

4 September 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who used the service and three members of staff including the manager. All the people we spoke with told us they were supported to be independent and were asked for their informed consent by staff before providing care. We found that the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to obtain peoples' consent.

People told us that they were happy with the care they received although a few were anxious as the service was scheduled to close in the future. Comments included "It's a good service here", and "It's very nice. Staff are very good." The service took measures to ensure peoples' needs were met.

People were happy with how their medicines were managed. Although the provider did not have provision for controlled drugs, they had appropriate arrangements in place to store, record and administer medicines.

Although some of the induction process of new staff had not been recorded as completed, staff were checked and went through an appropriate recruitment process before they were employed.

We were told by people who used the service that they provided feedback regarding their care. The provider undertook monitoring of the quality of the service and recommended improvements were actioned.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people who use the service and we used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us. Most of the people we spoke with said they were involved in their care. Two people said they had meetings with staff regarding their care. They all said they got choices and were able to do things they liked. One person said staff supported them to pursue their interests.

All the people we spoke with said they were well cared for by staff and that staff would help them if they asked. One person said they were "being treated well" and another person said they "feel healthy".

Two people we spoke with said they were able to choose what they ate and drank although some people said they did not get a choice. All the people we spoke with said they got a variety of food and were taken out to eat in the community. All the people said they enjoyed what they ate although one person said left left part of their lunch as they would never eat it. However, everyone got a choice in what they got to eat and drink.

All the people we spoke with said they had no concerns regarding their care and that they knew they could speak with staff if they wanted to raise any issues. They said staff addressed any concerns if they raised them.

Most of the people we spoke with said there were enough staff and that staff were able to meet their needs when required.
