During an inspection looking at part of the service

A visit to the home was not undertaken on this occasion. Information used to complete this review has been supplied by the Nominated Individual for the organisation, and information and feedback received by the CQC.

We also requested from the Nominated Individual a copy of the quality assurance information about what people had said about the service provided. We were told that a recent survey had been sent to people who used the service and their relatives and representatives, but this was being collated by an external agency and was not available to view at the time of this review.

During an inspection in response to concerns

Some people were unable to communicate with us about the service they receive at Claydon House. We therefore reached views about the delivery of the service through observation, information from other people, and viewing care records to assess compliance.

People we did speak with told us that they received sufficient food and meals were of a good quality. People also spoke well of the staff and told us that they found them to be respectful of their needs, and privacy and dignity. People told us that the home provided a variety of activities and they had plenty of opportunity to participate in these when they wanted to.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

The majority of the people living in the service were not able to tell us whether they were satisfied with the care they received. So in these instances we observed care being given, feedback was received and recording was viewed to ascertain the care provided to these people in the home.

Three people told us that there was sufficient food provided in the home, but for two people in their view the quality of the food was variable and one person told us the food was excellent. They spoke well of the staff and told us that they respected their privacy and dignity . People told us that they had opportunities to join in the activities in the home, and that there were opportunities for people to give their views on the care being provided.

28 April 2011

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We visited to check improvements made following the last review and report dated February 2011, when the sixteen outcome areas reviewed were found to be non-compliant. During both of the visits we looked at improvements for three of the sixteen outcome areas. Not all of the people using the service were able to tell us about their experiences. So in these instances observation, feedback and recording was viewed to ascertain the care provided to these people in the home. Those who were able to do so told us during the second visit to the home that they had concerns about the number of staff on duty and at the high turnover of staff. During both the visits to the home people told us that the quality of the food was good, but not all were aware they had a choice at meal times.

28 January and 23 February 2011

During a routine inspection

Not all of the people using the service were able to tell us about their experiences, those who were able to do so told us that there were insufficient staff on duty and that they had to wait a long time for care to be given. They said they liked the staff who were employed to work in the home, but were concerned at the high number of agency staff employed. One person said that they did not feel safe at night due to the high number of agency staff, who they felt did not fully know their care needs. The majority of people said that the quality of the food was good, but that they did not have a choice at meal times. They told us that they did not receive a snack or hot/cold drink in the evening and that they would like the opportunity to have this if they wished.
