All Inspections

17 October 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with seven people, three relatives, two staff and the assistant manager. People told us they were happy and they were consulted. People appeared to be happy and there was a jolly atmosphere in Ashgrove. Staff had a good rapport with people.

One person we spoke with said: 'It's a marvellous place, it really is'. Another person told us: 'I almost don't want to go home, they've been so good to me, this place is perfect'.

We found many services and teams were involved in assessing and planning people's care. We saw staff worked well with other professionals associated with their care.

We found people who used the services were safe and their health and welfare needs were met because there were competent staff who supported them.

We looked at systems that were in place to monitor the quality of the service provision. We saw records that showed regular audit checks were carried out.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with the people who used the service. They told us that the care was 'very good' and 'people looked after you.' One person told us that staff 'treats us well.'

We spoke with the staff and they told us that they enjoyed working there. One staff member told us that they felt 'each day was different with a different experience.'

We saw that staff had training in safeguarding and that there was a corporate safeguarding policy in place to support them. The people who used the service told us that they felt safe and would talk to the staff if they had any concerns.

We saw that the interaction between staff and the people who used the service was warm and friendly. The people we spoke with told us that the staff team were 'very happy and friendly.' One person told us that there was often a 'lot of laughter.'

We saw that there was a complaints leaflet on display in the reception area. The manager told us they would give all new arrivals into the service a leaflet detailing how people could complain.

We looked at the care plans of five people who used the service. We saw that they had been developed to meet the needs of the individual. There were risk assessments in place but only in two of the plans we looked at. The provider might like to note that it would be useful to have risk assessment plans in place for all the people who used the service to reduce the risk of harm.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people who live at the home. Most people are in the home for a short stay recovering from being in hospital and awaiting a care plan for them to return home.

All the people spoken with were very positive about the staff and the support they receive. They understood their care and the support they need. They told us that they are encouraged to make their own decisions about their daily activities some of their comments were "We can do what we want " " I don't like an early morning tea but I can get it if I wanted it, we get up when we want" We observed staff relating with people and talking with them about their care. People were seen being supported in a way that retained their dignity.

Another person said "Staff are very good I am enjoying my stay here they could not be more helpful. The meals are good and we always seem to be eating"

People spoken with said they have never had any concerns during their time at the

home. They commented "Staff are very good and kind. They are soon here if I need

anything. If I wasn't happy about something I would tell them."
