Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. A person told us, “The staff are wonderful. Kind, caring and nothing is too much trouble.”

 

A relative said, “I am always made to feel welcome. They know my loved one very well and she always seems happy with them around.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. One person often chose to spend time in the privacy of their room, staff respected this and always waited for the person’s consent before entering. Staff knew people well and engaged in meaningful conversations with people, chatting about their previous careers and family life.

 

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. A person told us, “There is always something to do. We have a laugh together and it helps time pass.” The activity staff were very knowledgeable about people’s preferences and were proactive in providing activities to meet individuals needs wherever possible. They told us they were well supported in their role by the provider and registered manager. We received positive feedback from several people about the activity coordinator; they were described as “one of the best."

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People told us they never waited very long for staff to provide support. Throughout the day we saw staff assisting people and all interactions we observed were positive. People who needed assistance when moving were supported appropriately, with staff talking them through what was happening.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. A professional we spoke with told us, “Staff are being empowered to make decisions by [the new registered manager] in a way they weren't previously.”

 

Staff told us they felt well supported and valued. Comments from staff included, “I receive regular supervision and feel supported in my role. My manager is approachable, supportive, and available whenever assistance is needed” and "The support is not 100% its 120%! I’m very happy in my job. I'm happy with the new manager and I feel well supported."
