During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because many of the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We spoke with the manager of the home, two members of staff, a relative visiting the home, two people who use the service and observed practice.

People were treated with respect and their dignity maintained. People told us that they were given choices and we observed staff encouraging people to maintain their independence. We saw that people's needs were assessed and monitored and people were encouraged to participate in activities.

The environment was warm, well ventilated and a visiting relative told us the service was 'homely'. Appropriate health and safety checks were carried out to ensure the environment was safe. An unpleasant odour was noted in the communal areas that may have been as a result of the tired and worn carpets and flooring in the communal areas. In addition to this some decorating materials were being stored in a communal bathroom that could have been hazardous to people who use the service.

There were appropriately skilled and experienced staff on duty and adequate numbers of staff to meet people's needs.

People knew how to make a complaint and the manager could demonstrate that people were encouraged to raise any concerns that they had about the service.

During a routine inspection

People living at the home told us that they are being well cared for and their needs are being met. People told us that they are asked their opinions and if they have any concerns they can speak with the manager and staff, and feel that they are listened to. People told us that overall they like the food at the home. Comments we received included: 'nothing is too much trouble for them'; 'they take me shopping'; 'Everyone is very kind'; 'the manager is very efficient and helpful'.
