During a routine inspection

During this visit we we able to speak with three support staff, the manager and three people using the service. We saw that the premises were well maintained and warm and friendly. All the rooms were clean, well decorated and homely, with lots of personal pictures and furnished how the people living at the home wanted.

We saw that the support staff acted in a very caring manner and involved all the people in activities and conversations. They supported people to express themselves in the way they wanted to.

The care plans were regularly updated and constructed in a way that made them easy to understand and reflected the care needs and wishes of the people using the service.

There were robust complaints procedures and regular quality and assurance audits in order to ensure that the service continually moved towards best practice.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we observed the care and support provided to four people. We found that people were treated with respect by the staff and in ways that protected their privacy and dignity. We were told by one relative that the staff and the provider ensured that people received care and support that enabled their personal preferences and encouraged their independence.

When we saw care or support being carried out, we saw that staff asked the person for their consent to the activity. We saw that staff waited for the person's agreement in all of the interactions we observed. However we were not able to locate a consent policy or procedure.

The home had an effective system of care planning that was used daily by the staff to provide person centred and appropriate care for people.

The staff clearly explained the importance of protecting people from harm and had a good understanding of safeguarding procedures. They told us how they would recognise any signs of potential abuse in their daily practice.

We observed that there were enough staff to provide care and support to people during our visit. This ensured that people received care and support without having to wait.

During a routine inspection

In this home most people rely on non-verbal communication through use of signs, photographs and pictures, gestures and sign language. From our observations during the visit we saw positive, friendly and humorous interaction between staff and people living in the home. Two people indicated to us that they were aware of their care plans and several indicated they do things that they like to do.

Information about the service came from several relatives who were very positive about the service provided to people at the home. This included involvement and consultation and examples of these were provided including how the service uses a range of communication techniques to gauge the opinion of people living in the home. They said that people do a range of activities and have good help with their health needs and other services are involved. They said the staff and management are approachable and any matters they raise are addressed. They are confident with the management of the service.

Staff feel supported by the manager and have regular training in key areas and some more specific areas to meet individual needs. They said supervision is also regular. They are aware of their care practices being monitored and said they have feedback. They are supported to develop skills in communication such as sign language and are aware of what to do if they have any concerns. They said people are involved in decisions about their lives.
