Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 4

The practitioner consistently demonstrated exceptional kindness, empathy and compassion, while maintaining the highest standards of privacy and dignity for the people they supported. We received more than 65 feedback forms from individuals who used the service, all of which were overwhelmingly positive. People praised the practitioner for providing clear explanations, delivering care and treatment efficiently, and offering helpful, personalised advice on ear care. They were frequently described as friendly, welcoming and genuinely caring. People told us the service was excellent, highlighting how the practitioner took time to put them at ease and build rapport before carrying out any procedures.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 4

The practitioner consistently treated people as individuals and excelled in ensuring each person’s care, support, and treatment were tailored to their unique needs and preferences. They took a warm, attentive approach to understanding people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, cultural backgrounds, and protected characteristics. When supporting children and people with disabilities and sensory needs such as autistic people, the practitioner took time to explain treatments in an accessible and reassuring way, showing the instruments beforehand and demonstrating the sounds they made to help individuals feel calm and prepared.

Feedback received by CQC highlighted several parents who praised the practitioner’s patience, understanding, and personalised approach when treating autistic children and those with sensory needs. Parents reported that, due to the practitioner’s skill and sensitivity, treatments were completed successfully, often for the first time where previous attempts elsewhere had not been possible.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The service promoted clients’ independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

The practitioner understood Gillick competency and there was a process to ensure young adults had control over their own privacy and the amount of parental involvement in managing their care and support. Feedback showed people chose to return for further treatments whenever they needed them as they had complete confidence in the skills of the practitioner.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 4

The practitioner excelled in how thoughtfully and attentively they listened to people’s needs, views and wishes. They were consistently responsive, noticing what people needed in the moment and acted quickly to minimise any discomfort, worry or distress.

Although the practitioner had set working days, people repeatedly told us how impressed they were by the flexibility offered. If someone called in pain, they would be seen the same day for advice and treatment, even on bank holidays, including Christmas Day. This level of commitment really mattered to people. One person, for example, shared that they needed urgent support the day before going on holiday; the practitioner saw them immediately, safely removed the earwax and reassured them by confirming there was no infection. They told us how much they appreciated this kindness and responsiveness.
