During a routine inspection

People were involved in developing their care and support as much as possible. Staff spent time building relationships with the people who used the service so they could get to know them and identify their individual care needs. Staff talked to people about the things that were important to them and involved health care professionals as necessary. One person who used the service said, "The staff are really nice, they always take notice of me."

People's independence was encouraged. If people liked to help with household tasks this was recorded, one person liked to assist with cooking meals and others did their laundry if they wished to during their stay. A person who used the service told us, "We can help do things, I do the washing up with staff."

There were systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection within the service. We observed the environment to be maintained in a clean condition. Staff told us specific cleaning routines were in place to maintain a good standard of hygiene.

We viewed the staff supervision records. These showed that staff received supervision every two to three months. They demonstrated the competency of staff members had been assessed at the start of their employment and had been monitored as part of their supervision.

We looked at the complaints records and found none had been recorded since our last inspection of the service.

During a routine inspection

Throughout our visit we observed positive interactions between the staff and the people using the service. Interactions were inclusive and friendly and the people appeared involved and happy. We spoke with all five of the people using the service who all told us they enjoyed staying at Cross Heath Drive. One person commented; 'It's fun coming here.'

Relatives spoken with said communication was good between the service and families. One relative said; 'The staff ring to check if there have been any changes in [my relative's] care and support needs before each visit such as if medication had changed.' This was confirmed when we reviewed the care records which showed care and support plans were updated following telephone reviews where required.

People told us they felt happy and safe when staying at the service. Relatives spoken with confirmed they had no worries or concerns about the care and support provided by the service.

We looked at how new staff were recruited and found that effective recruitment processes were in place. We reviewed four staff records and saw that appropriate checks had been undertaken before staff began work.

People spoken with were happy with the service and said they would tell the staff if they had any worries or concerns. Relatives spoken with had no worries or concerns about the service at this time. They told us they knew who to speak to if they had a complaint and believed they would be listened to and their concerns acted on.
