Good

Updated 16 July 2025

The assessment of Sunnyview House took place from 28 July to 5 August 2025. The service provides care for adults over and under 65 years, including those living with dementia. At the time of the inspection, 72 people were living at the service. At this inspection, the service was rated Good, an improvement from the previous Requires Improvement rating which was completed in October 2024. Improvements had been made since the last inspection and the provider is no longer in breach of regulation.

People were protected from avoidable harm through a proactive safety culture. Staff were open and honest, and lessons from incidents were shared and embedded. The environment was clean and well maintained, with improvements made to equipment storage and routine safety checks. Medicines were managed safely, and person-centred protocols were in place. Staff followed infection prevention and control procedures consistently.

Staffing levels were safe, and staff were skilled and supported. Leaders had introduced competency checks and observational monitoring, which improved consistency and quality of care. People were involved in managing risks and had personalised assessments to support safe choices.

Leadership was strong and inclusive, with a shared vision that drove rapid improvements. Governance systems were robust, and audits were used to celebrate success and identify areas for development. Staff felt able to speak up and reported a fair and inclusive culture. The service worked effectively with health and social care partners, and leaders used feedback and data to improve outcomes. There was a clear commitment to learning and innovation, with positive changes embedded since the last inspection. The overall culture was person-centred, open and focused on continuous improvement.

People's experience of the service

Updated 16 July 2025

People told us they felt safe and well cared for. Most described staff as kind, respectful and attentive, with 1 person saying, “They come in and chat with me… they make me feel safe.” Relatives echoed this, noting peace of mind and confidence in the care provided.

People had mixed views on staffing consistency. While some felt there were enough staff, others noted the use of agency workers. The provider is actively addressing this. Staff were observed responding promptly to call bells and requests for help, and people felt listened to. One relative shared, “They arranged for [my relative] to be next to the nursing station so they can keep an eye on them.”

People felt staff were skilled and knew how to meet their needs. Staff adapted care to individual preferences, such as using sensory mats, adjusting personal care times, and supporting people with sight loss. One person said, “They know what I can and can’t do, that makes me feel secure.”

Food and drink feedback was varied. Some praised the quality and choice, while others felt it lacked variety. The provider had begun to explore culturally appropriate dishes involving people to contribute recipes and cook with staff.

Activities were well received, with people enjoying bingo, quizzes, outings and religious services. A minibus enabled inclusive trips, and staff supported people to participate meaningfully. One person said, “It was lovely… I didn’t feel like a nuisance in my wheelchair.”

People knew how to raise concerns and felt heard. The service held regular “listening hours” and acted on feedback. The overall atmosphere was warm and inclusive, with people describing a sense of belonging and dignity. Most said they would recommend the home to others.
