During a routine inspection

We saw people were involved in making decisions about their lives. Staff spoke in a friendly and respectful way and offered choices to people and took time to make sure people could make their wishes known. We spoke with people using the service and their responses about their experience of living in the house were very positive, these people told us, “I have lived here for many years and the staff are friendly.”

The people we spoke with told us staff helped them with personal care and supported them to participate in group visits and activities. For example, one person told us, “I like going to the shops each week and visiting friends”

Two care workers told us they had been provided with appropriate training courses, one of which was safeguarding training, which they had both completed in the last twelve months to support them to recognise different types of abuse and understand what their duties and responsibilities were with regards to safeguarding vulnerable adults.

The people who use the service told us they felt safe in the house because the staff were always on hand to provide guidance and support. Two people we spoke with expressed a clear understanding of the complaints procedures in operation in the house, and expressed that they knew how to raise concerns with staff if they had any issues.

During a routine inspection

We saw people were involved in making decisions about their lives. Staff spoke in a friendly and respectful way and offered choices to people, for example about daily activities. We saw staff took time to make sure people could make their wishes known. We spoke with people who received care. They were very positive about their experience of living in Pennefather Court. "I am very happy here" one person told us, whilst another said " the staff are good, even when I have a bad day".

We saw care plans provided appropriate information about people's needs and how they were to be met. The focus of the care plans was very clearly the person who received care and support. We saw their particular needs, interests and background formed the basis of their care plans. There was also evidence people were involved in their care planning.

Staff told us they had been supervised and supported in their work with people who used the service.

When we spoke with people who used the service, they told us they felt comfortable with staff and the way their care and support was provided. They told us they could speak to the home's manager freely. They said they also had people outside the home who they would raise any concerns with if they wanted to. People who used the service, their representatives and staff were asked for their views about their care and treatment and they were acted on.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to five people who use this service during the visit.

People said they liked living at the home and the care they had received had been good. People said they had been supported by two key workers and staff had involved them whilst planning their care. We were told ongoing health care needs had been met by the relevant healthcare professional and carers had accompanied them on visits taking place outside the home. One person said that she requires a lot of support and would sometimes have to wait in the mornings for staff to assist her with her personal needs.

People said they liked the food, had sufficient drinks and were generally given a choice of meals at meal-times. Should the person not want the meal choices offered we were told that alternative choices had been offered.

People said they had been able to go out with the support of carers. One person said he would like more variety in activities he could access.

People said they had attended residents meetings and felt confident airing their views in this forum. We were also told that people felt confident raising concerns with either the manager or a carer.
