All Inspections

5 July 2013

During a routine inspection

Our inspection was unannounced and lasted approximately seven hours. There were 15 people living at the home. We spoke with six people living at Whipton Barton House. We also spent time with people in communal areas of the home so we could make a judgement about how well people were cared for. We also spoke with three staff members and the manager. We looked at a selection of care records, complaints records and staff training in safeguarding and complaints.

People told us they were happy living at Whipton Barton House. People's privacy and dignity was respected by staff. People's health and well-being was assessed, and care was provided in a way that suited people's individual needs. There was a training programme in place and staff had been provided with training to safeguard vulnerable people and to respond to complaints. The manager addressed complaints in a robust manner and ensured lessons were learnt from concerns.

During this visit, we inspected four outcome areas; all four were compliant.

During a routine inspection

We found the home to have a good atmosphere; there being lots of positive social exchanges between people who used the service and staff.

People who used the service retained community links, by accessing activities outside the home or by welcoming others in to entertain them. Privacy and dignity were respected in the home.

Staff in the home had a very good knowledge and understanding of the needs of people who use the service and work collaboratively with other professionals.

Staff are recruited in accordance to safe employment practices who were suitably qualified and experienced. Training, supervision and appraisals were offered. There were sufficient numbers of staff.

There is a Quality Assurance Framework in place that is used to continually monitor the service. Personal records are safely held in locked cupboards.
