All Inspections

15 December 2013

During a routine inspection

Oakwell Community Care Support Centre (CCSC) was registered to provide personal care and accommodation for up to 20 people who were elderly. The home was divided into three 'floors' or areas The service provided a permanent home for 14 people most of whom had some form of dementia; intermediate care for people who had recently come out of hospital for example due to an operation or after an accident, and the provision of a 'respite' or short stay bed- usually for someone with dementia.

On the day of the inspection we spoke with nine of the eighteen people who were living / staying at the home. We were able to speak with two people's relatives, and several members of staff.

The people who lived in the home, who we were able to speak with, were all very happy with standards of care. Even those people who were impaired by their dementia to a lesser or greater extent were able to at least say whether they liked the home, the food and the staff.

All of the people who used the service, who we spoke with, said they were very happy with the home's standards. The comments we received included, 'I like it very much here,' and 'they look after us very well'.

People who used the service raised no concerns about staff practice and said staff treated them with respect and dignity. People said the food was very good.

People said they were happy with the support they received with their personal care and health needs.

The medication system was well organised and operated effectively.

The accommodation was furnished and decorated to a good standard. The home was very clean and there were no offensive odours.

There were satisfactory numbers of staff on duty although we did receive some comments that staff at times could seem overstretched.

20 March 2013

During a routine inspection

There were 20 people living at the home at the time of our inspection. We spoke to seven people living at the home and one person's relative to get their views on the care provided.

Everyone we spoke to told us about aspects of the service they liked. One person told us "I'm very happy here". Another person told us "they try very hard, do a very good job".

We observed care being delivered in line with people's individual care plans and staff monitored people's health. One relative told us '(person) has a care plan, I was involved and I sign it every month'.

People told us they felt safe at the home. There was a safeguarding procedure in place and staff were knowledgeable about their individual responsibilities in safeguarding people from abuse.

People told us staff were "friendly", 'very kind and nice', 'lovely' and 'wonderful'. Staff received appropriate training and support.

There was an exemplary quality assurance system in place and people's views about the service were used to improve the service.
