During a routine inspection

When we visited we were able to meet with the four people who lived at the home. People had lived at the home for many years which meant that they knew each other well. The atmosphere in the home was very relaxed, happy and inclusive and it was apparent people were fully involved in the running of the home.

People told us they were consulted about all aspects of their lives. They told us they were never made to do anything they didn't want to do. Comments included 'I like all the staff. They are very kind. They help me when I need help and they never make me do anything' and 'I have a very busy life and am happy with everything."

Each person had a plan which described the care and support they required and how staff should provide it. Plans also included who the important people in their life were, how people communicated, daily routines, preferences and how they made decisions. This meant the staff could provide personalised care to each individual.

We asked the people who lived at the home about the staff who supported them. They made the following comments 'I like all the staff. They are all very kind' and 'the staff know what I want. They are always there for me.'

The home followed appropriate procedures for the management and administration of medicines. This meant that people received their prescribed medicines when they needed them.

Systems were in place to monitor and improve the quality of the service people received.

During a routine inspection

When we visited we were able to meet with three of the four people who lived at the home. One person was out on a work placement. The home promoted a very homely environment. People had lived at the home for many years which meant that they knew each other well. The atmosphere in the home was very relaxed, happy and inclusive and it was very apparent people were fully involved in the running of the home.

Each person had a plan which described the care and support they required and how staff should provide it. Plans also included who the important people in their life were, how people communicated, daily routines, preferences and how they made decisions. This meant the staff could provide personalised care to each individual.

The home had policies and procedures for recognising and reporting abuse and whistle blowing for staff. Staff confirmed that they had received up to date training in safeguarding adults from abuse and they were confident that any concerns would be fully investigated to ensure people were protected.

Staff received the training and support required to meet the needs of the people they supported. People benefitted from a small staff team who knew them well.

The people we spoke with told us that they would feel confident in discussing any concerns if they had any. They said 'I am very happy. I would say if I wasn't' and 'they would sort things out if you weren't happy.'

During a routine inspection

The majority of our visit was spent talking to the four people using the service. All confirmed that they were fully involved in life at the home and were 'always' treated with respect by staff. They told us that they have their own bedrooms and that 'staff always respect our privacy'.

People told us that they had regular 'house meetings' where they could make suggestions about, for example, activities and daily routines. People told us that they were fully involved in menu planning and that they 'each have a shopping day' where they are supported by staff. We observed people being fully involved in daily life at the home such as cooking, cleaning and laundry. We also saw that the home's telephone was answered by an individual using the service rather than a member of staff.

People told us that they were 'very happy' living at the home. They said; 'I love it here', 'this is my home and I am very, very happy' and 'I would never want to live anywhere else'. We asked people about the staff that supported them. They said; 'all the staff are lovely', 'I like all the staff, they are very kind and they help me'. People confirmed that they were able to make choices about their daily lives; 'I choose what time I go to bed and I am never made to do anything that I don't want to do'

People told us that staff supported them to attend health care appointments. They said; 'They always come with me and make sure I am alright', 'the staff will make the appointment for me and then we write it in the diary'. People told us that the home took them on holiday twice a year. They told us that recent holidays included a week at Bodmin Moor and The New Forest. One person said; 'We had such fun and I loved the discos in the evenings'.

We were able to observe how people spent their day and observe how staff interacted with people using the service. People appeared very comfortable and relaxed in the presence of staff and the provider and all responded positively to staff interactions. We observed staff interacting with people in a very kind and patient manner and it was clear that staff knew the needs, abilities and preferences of each person very well. People told us; 'I feel very safe here, this is my home'.
