During a routine inspection

When we visited we met with the three people who lived at the home. We saw they were fully involved in the running of the home. People had lived at the home for many years which meant they knew each other well.

People told us they were consulted about all aspects of their lives. They told us they were never made to do anything they didn't want to do. Comments included 'I feel in control of my life. I am very happy living here' and 'I have recently had a flu jab. That was my decision. I have one every year.'

Information about people's health needs and contact with health and social care professionals had been recorded. The three people we met with told us that staff supported them to attend health care appointments when needed.

We looked at the care records for the individual who self-medicated. We saw that a risk assessment was in place and that this had been regularly reviewed. This meant that the individual could maintain their independence with minimal risk to their health or well-being.

The people who lived at the home did not require 24 hour staff support. Staff from a nearby sister home regularly visited the home. People appeared very relaxed with the staff who supported them. They told us 'all the staff are lovely' and 'I can't fault anything. In fact, things have got even better by having the extra member of staff. We went out a lot, but we go out even more now.'

Systems were in place to monitor and improve the quality of the service people received.

During a routine inspection

When we visited we met with the three people who lived at the home. We saw that they were fully involved in the running of the home. One person showed us around the home and it was evident that the home was personalised to each person's tastes and preferences. Each person had their own bedroom.

People were supported to enjoy an independent lifestyle. They told us 'the staff are always there if we need them. They check that we are alright and we can pick up the telephone if we need them.'

Each person had an up to date plan of care which was personalised to their needs and preferences.

The home had policies and procedures for recognising and reporting abuse and whistle blowing for staff. The people we spoke with told us that they regularly discussed personal safety at their house meetings. They said 'the staff are very good. They talk to us about how to deal with strangers if they come to the house.'

Staff received the training and support required to meet the needs of the people they supported. People benefitted from a small staff team who knew them well.

The people we spoke with told us that they would feel confident in discussing any concerns if they had any. They said 'I don't have any worries at all. I am very happy here and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.' Another person said 'the owners and the staff would want to know if you had any worries at all. They wouldn't want you to be unhappy.'

The majority of our visit was spent talking to the three people using the service. Individuals' living at Speke Court were fully involved in the running of their home. They told us; 'the staff see us every day and every week the staff meet with us to help us do the cleaning rota, menu and plan for appointments'. They told us; 'We do the shopping every week and we take it in turns to cook'. People also told us; 'We have house meetings every month where we can talk about anything we like and can make suggestions', 'we have been talking about what we would like to do for Christmas'.

People said; 'all the staff are lovely', they also confirmed that staff treated them with respect and that they 'always respect our privacy'. People told us; 'We choose how we want to spend our day'.

People living at the home required minimal staff support to meet their health and social care needs. They told us that staff 'know them very well' and that they received the support they needed. One person said; 'I need staff support to take my medicines and they are here every morning at 8 O'clock to help me'. Another said; 'The staff know that I like to have a member of staff in the house when I have a shower and that makes me feel safe'.

People told us that they were supported to make and attend health care appointments. One person told us; 'I have regular appointments at the hospital and a member of staff always comes with me, they are all so lovely'. They said; 'staff will sit with us and help us put our appointments in our diary so that we always know what is happening'.

Two people were supported with work placements. They told us that they had enjoyed these jobs for 'many years'. One person said; 'It really makes me feel that I am being independent but I always know staff are there to support me when I need it'.

As previously mentioned in this report, each week staff support people to develop a menu and plan the shopping. People told us that they each take it in turns to cook and one person said; 'I need a bit more support with cooking so every week we have cookery lessons with the staff which I really enjoy'.

People told us that the home took them on holiday twice a year. They told us that recent holidays included a week at Bodmin Moor and the New Forest. They said; 'It was such fun and there was so much to do', 'We always have such a good time'.

Each person living at the home confirmed that they felt 'very safe' and knew what action to take if they had any concerns. They told us; 'We have regular house meetings with staff and we talk about bullying, abuse and dealing with strangers'. They also told us that they 'do their own banking'. People said; 'All the staff are lovely and have been here for many years', 'they know us really well and they are all so supportive'. They also said; 'The owners are lovely too and we see them most days'.

People told us; 'you only have to pick up the telephone and someone is here', 'we don't need to ring much but it is good to know that someone is there if you need them'.
