During an inspection looking at part of the service

The purpose of our visit was to follow up one area of non compliance found at our inspection of the 31st October 2012 in relation to the safe storage of controlled drugs and administration and recording of medicines. The provider had sent us an action plan after the inspection, which outlined what improvements were planned to achieve compliance. These included installing a controlled drugs cabinet and holding a team meeting to explain the correct procedures for administration of medication.

During our visit on 29th January 2013 we looked at medicine administration records for four people and found that these had been completed correctly. There was a clear procedure in place for the storage and disposal of medicines that were no longer required or out of date.

We judged that the provider was meeting this outcome.

During a routine inspection

People expressed their views and were involved in making decisions about their care and treatment. One person we spoke to said, "This is my home and I like living here." We spoke with three people who told us that they are involved on a daily basis with the care and support the staff give them. They told us that they had a choice of food and were able to go to bed and get up when they wished .

During the visit we inspected the care plans and assessments of four people who used the service. We saw that the plans had been completed with personalised information about how care needs should be met. We spoke with two support workers during the visit, who demonstrated a good understanding of people's needs and how they should be met.

We looked at staff training records and found that all staff had received mandatory training during induction. One member of staff we spoke to said "The training is phenomenal this is a great place to work and I'm proud how well the home works".

People's complaints were fully investigated and resolved, where possible to their satisfaction. The complaints procedure was available on the notice board next to the office.

During our inspection we found that people were not protected against all risks associated with the unsafe use and management of medicines. This was because controlled drugs were not stored safely and the administration of medicines was carried out but not recorded correctly.
