Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

Staff treated people with kindness and compassion. There was a friendly atmosphere and people were relaxed. Comments from people included, “We have a very inclusive group of people here” and “I get on with staff and other residents.” We saw people greeting each other and enjoying spending time with one another. Staff were gentle, smiled when speaking with people and approached them in a personalised way. Staff spoke about people in a positive way.

Treating people as individuals

Staff treated people as individuals. Staff supported people to celebrate their professional and personal achievements, discussing the theatrical work they had been involved in. People watched the films and television work they had appeared in or worked on together and discussed this. Staff told us this was an important part of the home recognising people’s successes. People were involved in and led different activities. For example, playing instruments for others.

People’s religion, culture and lifestyle choices were respected, and their needs were met. There were visits from religious and community groups. People were supported to celebrate festivals and special events. There were regular volunteers who visited to offer support. There was a pet cat who people told us they enjoyed spending time with.

In addition to group activities, staff supported people to pursue individual interests.

Independence, choice and control

People were able to make choices about their care and how they spent their time. People were involved in decisions about menus and the home in general as well as choices about their own care and lives. Staff knew people well and offered a variety of different events and activities to reflect people’s interests. The provider employed an activities coordinator who helped to organise a range of different group activities and events as well as catering for individual hobbies. They told us they were able to purchase any equipment needed or requested by people. Comments from people included, “Staff spend time getting to know us and doing fun things” and “The activities lady is excellent.”

People were supported to be independent when they wanted and were able. Care plans included information on what people could do for themselves and how they should be supported to make choices. People told us they were not restricted.

People were assessed by a physiotherapist when they moved to the home. Those who needed additional support, were able to arrange regular visits to help with mobility, exercises and pain management.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Staff responded to people’s immediate needs. People told us staff attended call bells promptly and were available when needed. A person told us, “Staff are very good. They are here when I need them. They make sure I am never bored.” We observed staff being attentive and responsive to people’s requests.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider supported staff wellbeing. There were formal systems of supervision and team meetings. Staff found these helpful and supportive. Staff told us there was good informal support and teamwork. They had opportunities to discuss their wellbeing and develop their skills. Staff were rewarded for good work. There were high levels of job satisfaction. A member of staff explained, “We get brilliant support. [Registered manager] is always helpful. Always willing to answer questions and helps with the everyday work.”
