During a routine inspection

At the time of our unannounced inspection three people lived at Cambian Nightingale. We met them all, although they were not able to discuss their care with us. Two relatives e-mailed us their views on their family member's care. Both were positive about the home and its staff. For example, one commented, 'Staff and managers have been friendly and welcoming, happy to spend time chatting with me, and also respectful that sometimes we want to have time together without staff around, whilst being on hand if needed'.

We also examined records, spoke with the manager and four support workers, and observed staff supporting people in communal areas.

Since we last inspected the home, it had re-opened in August 2013 for people with autism.

Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. Where people did not have the capacity to consent, the provider acted in accordance with legal requirements.

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights. A relative commented, '[Person] seems to be settling in well and we are very happy with the care and attention that [person] has received so far'.

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs.

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and manage the quality of the service and risks to people's health, safety and welfare.

During a routine inspection

During this unannounced inspection we used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service. We gathered the views of three individuals living at Stourcliffe Avenue, observed and spoke with three care workers, and reviewed records.

People living at Stourcliffe Avenue told us care workers were polite respectful and caring. One individual told us 'everything is nice here'. Documentation evidenced that care workers had detailed up to date guidance to ensure they knew how best to support people.

Care workers at Stourcliffe Avenue had comprehensive knowledge of safeguarding vulnerable people and knew what to do if they were concerned about an individual. People living at Stourcliffe Avenue had a range of information to ensure they knew who they could talk to if they were upset or worried about something.

Care workers received supervision and training to ensure they knew how to support individuals they were working with.

An individual living at Stourcliffe Avenue said the home had begun to listen to people using the service. A care worker told us 'we try to make living at Stourcliffe Avenue a happy experience for people'.
