During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with two people who use the services and four staff. People spoke highly of the care, support and treatment choices that they had received and were given. They told us they were listened to and were involved in decisions about their care and treatment. One person told us, 'They are great here, they really look after me well". Another person told us, "There is nothing to fear, so laid back, they are here to help. If you don't hold back with them they won't hold back with you'. We saw evidence that Addaction Kirkby had acted on recommendations in the previous inspection report regarding work that was needed to ensure that any risks of receiving care or treatment that was inappropriate or unsafe were identified and acted upon in a timely manner. They had produced an action plan and provided evidence to demonstrate they had followed up on actions.

Addaction Kirkby is a community based treatment and recovery service situated in Kirkby town centre. It was also linked with other Addaction services that operated in the Merseyside area. It offered a wide range of services for people who were addicted to drugs and alcohol.

For the purpose of monitoring compliance we looked at those activities that required the service to be registered under the Health and Social Care Act 2008. These included the prescribing and monitoring of medication to reduce people's dependence on drugs and alcohol. The monitoring of people's health and welfare through support from medical professionals including a needle exchange service. Work carried out with the Criminal Justice Services for drug using offenders including drug testing and treatment.

We contacted drug commissioning services on Merseyside to seek their views of the service. No issues of concern were raised.

We spoke with people who used the service. All were happy with the support and treatment provided. They said the staff team were supportive and helpful and were available when they needed them. They also said they valued the key worker system as it helped them build up a relationship with one person rather than seeing someone different all the time. Some comments made were;

'This time the support I've been given has made me really want to change and stop using, this time I really believe I can do it.'

'I never thought I could stop using heroin and have a normal life but coming here has shown me I can and I am now a volunteer and support others.'

'The Doc is great he spends time talking with you trying to find out what's going on with you.'

'He's no push over he tells you as it is and is very kind and treats me with respect.'
