During a routine inspection

We do not currently rate substance misuse services.

We found the following areas of good practice:

  • there was enough staff to meet the needs of the young people using the service
  • staff received necessary training and access to a range of other specialist training
  • managers supported staff, who received supervision and appraisals and were able to contribute with suggestions
  • staff assessed risks effectively and prepared plans detailing how they would be mitigated
  • staff carried out comprehensive assessments of a person’s needs to plan their care and developed personalised, holistic, and up-to-date recovery and support plans alongside the young person
  • staff delivered treatment and communicated in an age-appropriate way
  • the service worked closely with other agencies and families to provide a holistic package, including working to improve a young person’s self-esteem and confidence, and promoting diversionary activities
  • staff treated people with a caring and respectful attitude, including young people using the service, parents or carers and young people affected by their parent’s substance misuse
  • the service facilitated a young person’s community mutual aid group that was open to all young people to provide peer support, diversionary activities and training
  • the service worked with other agencies to enable them to carry out early initial screening for substance misuse in young people and a simple and quick pathway into treatment.

However, we also found areas that the provider could improve:

  • The risk management plan did not include agreed actions that staff would take if a client missed an appointment or dropped out of treatment.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people during our inspection at the service. Some of these discussions were held over the telephone and some face to face with people who were visiting the Addaction office and drop in centre for their appointments. They all spoke very positively about Addaction. Some people's comments captured included, 'staff are nice enough', 'I feel safe when I see the staff', 'staff are friendly and helpful and respect me and my confidentiality', 'no worries', 'staff have been brilliant',' staff have got to know me and are really helping me' and 'I can ring at any time and there is someone to help me, I've no complaints at all.'

We found that care records reflected the care and treatment people received and that people were actively involved in setting their own goals for treatment. Staff sought consent to care and treatment for all people entering the service and people using the service were aware of their rights and the boundaries of confidentiality.

Our discussions with staff confirmed that there were clear processes and actions in place to minimise and prevent abuse from occurring in the service. People said they felt 'safe' accessing the service.

We found there were effective recruitment and retention processes in place.

We found that a complaints policy and procedure was in place. All of the people we spoke with said they had no complaints or concerns about the service.

During a routine inspection

We talked with four people who used the service and two relatives during our inspection visit. Some of these discussions were held over the telephone and some face to face with people who were visiting the Addaction office and drop in centre for their appointments.

People spoke highly of the care, support and treatment choices available to them. They felt listened to and involved in decisions about their care, support and treatment. One person told us ''The staff are brilliant I can't fault the service; they go out of their way to help you and always find time to see me'. Another person said 'The staff are not biased they are not judgemental, brilliant.'

Other comments captured from people and their families included, 'They (staff) are brilliant', '(staff) keep me safe', 'they (staff) are almost like my family' and 'I could not have done without them.'
