During a routine inspection

When we carried out an unannounced visit to Hollymere House in April 2011 we spoke to a number of residents throughout the day.

Almost all the comments we received were positive and from what we were told we got a sense that people in the home were cared about and treated with dignity through the examples of kindness and patience we saw. The home had a calm and dignified atmosphere.

We were told that 'You really cannot fault the staff here', 'they treat me like they would their own mother' 'they always smile', 'very satisfactory', that 'the girls work hard' and 'I like being here'

One person commented that 'Staff are lovely to the people with dementia and they pay attention to those who are quieter so they are not left out'.

Resident told us that they had a particular need which caused them discomfort and distress and which had not been addressed in the past. They said that it was dealt with immediately on the appointment of the new manager. They said that the newly appointed manager 'has made heck of a difference ' he consults people'. A relative told us that the standards of care appeared to have improved recently.

One lady told us that one 'Can request food at mealtimes if there is nothing you like'. At lunchtime we saw a resident say she didn't feel hungry and didn't wish to go to the dining room. The care worker accepted her decision and asked if the kitchen might make a sandwich for later in the day.

A resident told us that staff never grumble even when they are pestered. Another told us 'Never left waiting, it's much better than other places'.
