During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods such as reviewing records, we talked to people that used the service, observed staff supporting people and we talked to staff to help us understand the experiences of people using the service. This helped us to review the care and support as people using the service lived in the community and had limited verbal communication.

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights. People's essential lifestyle plans were person centred and documented people's wishes in relation to how their care was provided. We observed that people choose how to occupy themselves in the service by listening to music, cleaning their home and playing games with staff to stimulate their sensory needs.

People who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening. We spoke with staff and staff demonstrated an understanding of the safeguarding procedures and the different forms of abuse.

People that used the service told us that they were happy and received excellent support. People's relatives also told us that support was excellent.

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. People were observed being supported by staff, it was clear that staff were experienced and understood the needs of people extremely well.

During a routine inspection

We visited three people in their own homes. Two other people who live with these people were at home during two of the visits.

The people we visited were able to tell us their views through either speech and/or using pictures and photographs in their care and support plans. Staff provided sensitive communication support where appropriate throughout the visits.

Some people the service supports have complex ways of communicating. We observed staff communicating with one individual. They had a good understanding of how the individual communicated and the staff interacted in a relaxed and positive way them. The individual responded with smiles and some speech.

The three people told us that they like and know the staff that support them. They told us that they are involved in choosing new staff.

They told us that they are involved making decisions about their lives and what happens in their homes. All of them told us that they like and get on with the people who they share their home with.

People showed and told us that they say how their care and support is provided. They told us that staff support them to take their medication and that they see a doctor when they need to.

People told us that they are involved in cooking, looking after their house and shopping.

People told us that the equipment that they use all works and staff know how to use it.
