The assessment took place between18 June 2026 to 16 July 2026.Avon House Rest Home–Balcombe is a small residential care service registered to provide accommodation and personal care for up to 19 adults, including older people living with dementia and people with mild, moderate to severe frailty. At the time of the assessment the service,14 older people were living at the service.
We carried out this inspection as part of our ongoing monitoring to review the quality of care provided and assess compliance with regulatory requirements.
We identified some shortfalls in aspects of the provider`s environmental risk management. Following feedback received during the assessment, the provider acted immediately to address these concerns and demonstrated a responsive approach to improving safety and a commitment for continuous improvement. Despite these shortfalls, the environment was clean, well maintained, and included reasonable adjustments to support people`s access and independence.
Staff demonstrated a good understanding of their roles and responsibilities, including recognising and responding to risks, protecting people from harm and supporting people's well-being. Systems were in place to support staff through training, supervision and ongoing professional development.
The provider promoted an open and supportive culture where people, relatives and staff were encouraged to share feedback and raise concerns. Governance systems and quality assurance processes supported oversight of the service, while reflective discussions and engagement with external professional networks encouraged learning, sharing of good practice and continuous improvement.
The provider worked collaboratively with healthcare professionals, including GPs, community nurses, and other specialist NHS services to support people's changing health needs. Systems were in place to monitor people's health, promote continuity of care and support positive outcomes for people.
We asked people share their comments of the service as a whole. A person told us, “I wouldn`t change anything.” Relatives also spoke positively about the service, largely describing it as, “very homely and caring. A well-managed home."
