During a routine inspection

We were told that the home is to close next year and on the day we visited their were 17 people living at the care home. People we spoke with also told us that they had been informed of the homes closure and were being supported to find alternative accommodation that met their needs.

We spoke with five people living in the home. People told us they liked living at the home. One person said 'the staff look after us really well here.'

Interactions between staff and people living in the home were positive and respectful. Staff took time not to rush people and listened to what they had to say. People told us they knew who their key worker was and told us that they spoke to them about the care and support they received.

We saw that care plans were reviewed monthly and daily records we viewed confirmed that staff provided people with care and support as described in their care plans.

We saw that activities planned to take place at the home were displayed in the home. One person said 'the activities are great fun. I like getting out on the minibus'.

People we spoke with told us that they liked the food at the home. One person said "the food is lovely here, we get lots of choice and the cook is fantastic'.

Staffing levels at the home were based on people's dependency levels and these were monitored monthly to ensure there were enough staff to meet people's needs.

We found there were effective systems in place to monitor the quality of the service provided.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with eight people about the quality of the care they received at St.Peters. They were all very positive about staff and told us how; "staff are very kind" and "staff are all very good".

A number of individuals commented on the flexibility of staff and their ability to make their own decisions about how they led their lives particularly around daily routines. One person told us; "it is up to me what I do, there is no pressure on you" and another person told us how they could; "choose when I get up it is up to me".

One person we spoke who liked to spend a lot of time in their room told us this was; "never a problem, the staff see it as my choice".

Individuals also told us about their experience in relation to staffing arrangements. One person told us; "staff are always busy". Another person said; "one of the main faults about this place is that there is not enough staff". Staff we spoke with also made a number of comments about staffing in the home; "feels like you are rushing on an escalator", "people's needs have changed, need more help and support", "there is limited time to sit and chat" and "it is too much task orientated".

The home received compliments from relatives as part of the questionnaire they issued:

"wonderful home, looked after brilliantly by all the staff and I cannot praise it enough"

"my relatives feel safe and the care is very good"

"staff are a credit to their profession I can get on with my life knowing she is safe and secure and more importantly happy".

During a routine inspection

We asked people about the service they received and about the support they are given by staff. People who live at the home told us that they were happy, staff assisted them with their care needs, were supportive and kind.

No complaints or concerns about the services provided were raised with us by people who live at the home.
