All Inspections

19 July 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we met people who lived at the home. We were unable to speak to them in detail about their experience of living at the home as they were living with dementia. We spoke with staff and observed care and support being delivered by staff to get an insight into their experience of living in the home.

Interactions between staff and people who lived in the home were appropriate and respectful. Staff took time not to rush people and listened to what they had to say.

We saw that care plans were reviewed monthly and daily records we viewed confirmed that staff provided people with care and support as described in their care plans.

We saw that regular activities were planned to take place at the home and in the community.

People we spoke with told us that they liked the food at the home. People had a choice of meals and staff were aware of people's preferences in relation to food and drink. The home had procedures in place to ensure that people were protected from malnutrition and dehydration.

The home had systems in place which ensured that medications were administered and stored safely in the home.

We found that the staffing levels at the home were based on the needs of people. Staff we spoke with felt that there were enough staff working at the home.

We found there were effective systems in place to monitor the quality of the service provided.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection on 29 May 2012 we identified that the home was not compliant with the regulations in the outcome areas of both care and welfare and safe guarding. The provider wrote to us and told us what they were going to do to make sure that they were compliant with the regulations in these areas. We visited the home to check that the provider had made the improvements which they told us they would.

The manager began working at the home May 2012. We found that the manager had made improvements at the home. People's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. People had also been assessed in the areas of nutrition and hydration, skin integrity and mobility.

The home had identified incidents and had reported them to the local safeguarding authority for further investigation as appropriate. The home had been working with the local safeguarding authority to improve the practice in the home.

During the inspection we spoke with three members of staff. We did not speak to people living at the home but we observed care workers interacting with and supporting people.

29 May 2012

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We observed care practices, spoke with staff working at the home, looked at care records and spoke to the relative of one person who lived at the home.

During our visit we observed care workers treating people with respect and offering people choices. One relative we spoke with told us that the 'standard of care was excellent and the staff were very good and went out of their way to care for people'.

However, the care plans contained basic information on how to support individuals and it was not clear how staff would use this information to provide consistent support for individuals who lived at the home.

The manager had just started at the home and acknowledged that there was 'a lot of work to do at the home.' The manager explained that she had been moved to the home to address issues and problems that had been raised by the team manager. We saw evidence that the home manager is making changes to areas they have identified. Staff we spoke with confirmed this and felt supported in their roles since the new manager had moved to the home.
