During an inspection looking at part of the service

As part of this review, we spent time talking to people using the service and/or their representatives where necessary to gain their views of the service.

A person told us that they would not wish for anything to change in the home and had told staff in their review that they were happy at the home and wished to stay there.

People told us that food is 'quite nice' and that they received food that meet their cultural needs. One person described the meat as 'a bit tough'.

People told us that they felt the staff keep the place 'clean and tidy' and that they were generally happy with their rooms and the environment in general.

People told us that there were no issues with the way they were supported to take their medication. A person told us that staff, 'always come in with them (tablets) in a little cup on time every morning.' One of the people living at the home told us that staff asked them if they would like to have the flu vaccination and an eye test.

A person using the service told us that their needs are met 'absolutely' by staff. Another person told us that 'staff are quite nice and not nasty in any way' and that they felt safe at the home. A visitor commenting on behalf of their relative told us that the staff were 'marvellous' and told us how they were able to sleep at night knowing that their relative was well cared for.

During a routine inspection

As part of this review, we spent time talking to people using the service and/or their representatives where necessary to gain their views of the service.

People smiled and answered 'yes' when we asked if people were happy living in the home. People told us that they liked to watch the TV and listen to the radio, and take part in activities offered in the lounge, which are organised by the activities coordinators.

A visitor also told us that the breakfast can be very late 'sometimes ten to ten'. People told us 'they tell me breakfast is here then I come up and there is nobody here, the place is empty'. People commented that the porridge was cold. Others however were more positive about the food and commented 'can't complain about the food' and commented that their breakfast was 'ok' and 'good'.

We were told by relatives that "there are a number of residents who are unable to feed themselves. As there are only two carers and, some of the residents do not sit in the lounge but in their own rooms, this means that the residents have to fend for themselves or have to wait until a carer has finished feeding or distributing the food." We asked people about the choice of Caribbean meals and we were told that 'sometimes we have some rice, but we can't expect special food.'

People told us that they can see the Doctor when they want to.

A visitor commenting on behalf of their relative told us that the cleaning regime is not very good and showed us behind the furniture and bed where there was a thick amount of dust. People who use the service commented that they were upset that the showers in their unit were not working and that they had to go to another unit to use the shower.

A visitor told us that their relative's room had not been decorated in ten years and another visitor told us that they felt their relative's bedroom could be kept tidier.

People told us that they could speak to staff or the Manager if they had a concern or worry. Others told us that they might mention a concern but would more likely 'keep quiet' and would 'prefer not to make a fuss'. Visitors commenting on behalf of their relatives told us that staff do respond to complaints or concerns but sometimes not very quickly and 'have to say a few times before things are done'. Others told us that a response to their complaint was very defensive and not within timescales.
