Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 17 to 26 June 2025.
Patron House is a care home which is registered to provide accommodation, personal care and support to up to 12 older people. At the time of our inspection, 11 people were living at the home.
We carried out this assessment to review actions taken by the provider following our last inspection. The previous report was published in October 2024. At that time, the service was rated requires improvement in the safe and well led key questions, and overall. There were breaches of regulations 12, 17 and 18, relating to safe care and treatment, good governance and staffing.
In this assessment, we reviewed 4 quality statements under the safe and well led key questions; safe and effective staffing; infection prevention and control; medicines optimisation and good governance. We found improvements had been made and the provider was no longer in breach of regulations. However, there were still concerns about the expectations placed on staff, and we found minor shortfalls relating to medicines and infection prevention and control. These were addressed immediately. The rating for the safe and well led key questions have changed to good. The ratings for the quality statements we did not assess remain unchanged. This means the overall rating for the service has changed to good.
Improvements had been made to governance, and oversight helped the provider identify shortfalls and take action where necessary to ensure good quality care was provided. Staffing levels during night shifts had been increased. We received positive feedback about care staff and the new management team. Changes had been made to the environment and hygiene standards in the home. New procedures helped staff manage medicines, and standards were monitored.
People's experience of this service
People and their relatives were positive about the service and the staff who supported them. One relative commented, “I am blown away by the whole experience and level of support.” Another relative told us, “[Name] seems happy. They all seem happy.”
Relatives were aware that there had been changes at the service. They were pleased there was a more stable staff team, and felt staff and managers were caring, knowledgeable and person-centred. One relative told us they thought more staff were needed on each shift to support tasks such as cleaning. Another relative felt staff would benefit from more support with providing activities.
Relatives felt able to raise any concerns with staff and managers if needed. They were confident these would be taken seriously and issues addressed if possible.
