Updated 12 June 2026
Date of assessment: 15 June to 14 July 2026. Compassionate Lodge is a care home providing residential care to adults of all ages including, people who misuse drugs and alcohol, people with an eating disorder, autistic people or people with learning disabilities, people with mental health conditions, physical disabilities and sensory impairments. The inspection was undertaken to provide the service with its first rating.
We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.
The provider did not always identify and manage environmental risks effectively, which placed people at risk of harm and lessons had not always been learned from past incidents. There were enough trained staff to meet people's needs. Medicines were managed safely. People, relatives, staff and professionals all spoke positively about the service's approach to raising concerns and keeping people safe.
People's needs were regularly assessed and reviewed and care was person-centred. Staff understood people's needs and were kept up to date on any changes. The provider worked collaboratively with others. Staff supported people holistically, respecting their choices. Mental capacity assessments were completed when required.
People had detailed, individualised care plans and staff understood people well. Staff promoted people’s independence and encouraged them to participate in meaningful activities.
People were involved in decisions about their care. Staff worked effectively with people, relatives and professionals to deliver coordinated, responsive care. Feedback was encouraged, and people’s preferences and future wishes were respected, promoting choice, continuity and positive outcomes.
Governance and oversight systems were not always effective in identifying and addressing environmental safety risks or ensuring learning from incidents was fully embedded. While the provider took prompt action when concerns were highlighted, improvements were needed to strengthen quality assurance processes and ensure risks were consistently identified, managed and learned from. Management was approachable and promoted a positive, inclusive and person-centred culture. Staff, people and relatives felt listened to and valued.
We have found breaches of regulation at the service relating to safe care and treatment and good governance. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and / or appeals have been concluded.
