During an inspection in response to concerns

We inspected Gatwick Grove on this occasion in response to concerns expressed to us by West Sussex and Hampshire social services. We were informed that the heating provided was not sufficient to keep the premises warm.

We spoke with three people who lived there. They told us that they were warm enough. One person was wearing a jumper, another person was wearing a t shirt, whilst the third was wearing night clothes.

We visited four of the six bedrooms, with the permission of the people living there, and also the communal areas. We found that each room had been well heated except for a lounge and a bedroom on the first floor.

We spoke with each of the five members of staff who were on duty. We saw that they wore thick jumpers and fleeces. They told us they wore such clothes as they were expected to go outside with people to help feed animals that were owned by the care home. During the course of our visit we saw several occasions where staff accompanied people when they went outside. We also noted that people had also put on warm jumpers when they went outside

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with five people who use the service during our visit to Gatwick Grove, one person told us how much they enjoyed looking after the animals at the home.

Another person wanted to show us the task that they were completing making minor repairs with supervision to their bedroom.

We spoke with a relative of one person who told us that they were very happy with the care that their relative had received and felt that the home had worked hard to improve the quality of their relatives life by finding them activities that they enjoyed participating in.

Two of the relatives of people living in the home who we talked to said that their relative was being well cared for, had an active lifestyle, and that staff related well to them.

Two of the people living in the home said they did not wish to help feed and clean out the animals, but for one person who was spoke to enjoyed doing this and for them it was an important part of their day.

One of the people said they did not believe they fitted in at Gatwick Grove.

During a routine inspection

People have been able to develop their independence and communication skills, and interact with staff in positive ways. Improvements to the premises and the opportunities and choices now available to people are seen very positively by people living at Gatwick Grove.
